The Sentence That Opened a Funeral

“You’re bigger than what you think,” the preacher said, “but you can never be bigger than what you think.”

I was sitting at a friend’s funeral when he opened with that line. His point landed hard: my friend’s time to become more was over—but ours isn’t. So he asked the room the only questions that matter. Do you have the belief? Have you seen yourself in a bigger capacity? What do you actually want?

He was preaching about hope. And here’s what I’ve learned since: hope isn’t soft, and it isn’t just positive thinking. Hope is the foundation of all results. It lives at the intersection of two things—what you believe is possible, and what you genuinely desire. When one of them weakens, we procrastinate, we settle, we protect ourselves from disappointment. When both come back together, we get energized and disciplined again.

This week’s full reflection breaks down why we stop believing, the four places we all live, and how to restore hope in yourself and the people you lead.

The full reflection — including 5 deep prompts — is inside the Inner Circle this week.
