Who’s Writing the Code?

We like to believe we become who we want to become. I don’t think that’s true. I think we become what we’re repeatedly exposed to.

Every day something is shaping your mind—the conversations, the music, the books, the feeds, the stories you tell yourself. Your mind is always being programmed. The only real question is who’s writing the code.

For years I tried to think better. Then I realized that wasn’t the challenge. The better question was: what is shaping my thoughts? Thoughts don’t just appear. They’re fed. So instead of fighting every negative thought, I changed what I consumed. Different books. Different mentors. Different mornings.

Because if my environment created the person I had become, then changing my environment could create the person I wanted to become.

This week’s full reflection breaks down the mentors and books that rebuilt me, the 3-step formation; protect your mind, lift your spirit, build your identity, and the one question to ask every morning.

The full reflection — including 5 deep prompts — is inside the Inner Circle this week.
