Part 2 — Artist's Note (Preview)
I wrote "Law" when I was around 30 years old, working in a TANF-connected workforce development program in Southwest DC. At the time, I was building the Workin' & Winnin' album and trying to figure out what belonged at the center of the project.
The women who inspired this song were mothers participating in our workforce program. Some came in hopeful. Some came in defeated. Some had figured out how to navigate the system and were simply doing what they needed to do to survive. But underneath all those differences, I saw the same thing in almost every set of eyes: exhaustion.
People often assume poverty is a strategy problem. That wasn't what I saw...
Including what I call The Good Mother Theory and why I placed this song in the middle of the album.
Part 3 — Coaching Connection (Preview)
"Law" sits underneath this week's reflection because it reveals something that took me years to understand.
